Lambert hopes to bring playmaker to Aston Villa

Paul Lambert has confirmed he is in the market for a playmaker this month, and is said to have enquired about Norwich City’s Wes Hoolahan and Porto’s Steven Defour, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Lambert finds himself under increasing pressure to bring in new additions this month, after a poor run of results which culminated in a humiliating FA Cup defeat at home to Sheffield United on Saturday.

Hoolahan is believed to be the Scot’s first choice, having worked with the midfielder previously at Norwich City.

The 31-year-old Irish international also boasts plenty of Premier League experience, something Lambert has previously said he is looking for with regards to new signings.

However, Villa’s poor relationship with Norwich could prove a stumbling block when it comes to the move, with the Canaries still unhappy about Lambert’s acrimonious exit from Carrow Road 18 months ago.

Belgian international Defour is a transfer alternative, and the 25-year-old’s agent, Paul Stefani, has revealed Villa have already made contact.

“Aston Villa have let it be known that they are interested in Defour,” Stefani said.

“It is not yet concrete, and it is the same story for other clubs that I can’t name.”

Lambert admits the current Villa squad lacks a creative influence, which is something he hopes to rectify this month.

“I call them No.10s,” said Lambert.

“I think people that can make things happen are important, because they take a risk and they take a chance. If you can get somebody like that in your side they can make things happen.

“There’s nobody like that in our squad right now.”
