Birmingham fans on Twitter slate Craig Gardner after Aston Villa loss

Birmingham fans on Twitter were not happy after their side lost the Second City derby 4-2 to Aston Villa on Sunday, and midfielder Craig Gardner in particular took plenty of stick for his performance.

The Blues actually took the lead at Villa Park just before the half-hour mark through in-form striker Lukas Jutkiewicz. However, two quickfire goals from Johnathan Kodija and Jack Grealish ensured that the home side went into the break in the lead.

Tammy Abraham added another from the penalty spot just six minutes into the second period before Birmingham left-back Kristian Pedersen pulled one back with his first goal for the club since his summer move from FC Union Berlin.

However, it was Villa’s fourth goal that killed the game and drew most of the criticism for Gardner. Scotsman Alan Hutton picked up the ball in his own half and ran past Gardner and all the way into the Birmingham box before firing past Lee Camp.

Gardner began his career at Villa, playing 80 times for Birmingham’s rivals before joining the Blues for the first time in 2011. Now in his second spell at St Andrew’s, it’s clear that fans were not happy with the 32-year-old’s poor attempt to stop Hutton.
