Fulham to rival Newcastle in race for front-man

Darren BentFulham are set to go head-to-head with Newcastle in the race for Aston Villa outcast Darren Bent, according to reports from The Mirror.

The former England international has fallen off of the radar at Villa Park of late, with manager Paul Lambert banishing him to the bench following the emergence of Christian Benteke.

As a result, it looks likely that Bent could be on the move in the coming months, with the Midlanders keen to remove his weekly earnings from their expenditure.

Newcastle were thought to be leading the race for his signature, but now Fulham are also keen.

Martin Jol is looking to add a guaranteed source of goals to his squad this summer, and is attracted to Bent’s formidable goalscoring record in the English top flight.

The Cottagers were expected to have to conduct their business with a restricted budget, but new owner Shahid Khan is said to be willing to provide the funds for a move.

Jol believes that the 29-year-old will provide the ideal abilities to compliment current star striker Dimitar Berbatov, who enjoyed a wonderful debut season at Craven Cottage.

Bent currently pockets £65,000-per-week at Villa, but Fulham would be likely to request that he drops his demands.
