Aurtenetxe seems like a strange signing for Leeds, but Bielsa knows how to get the best out of him

Leeds United are interested in signing defender Jon Aurtenetxe who is available on a free transfer, according to Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo.

What’s the story?

Aurtenetxe played most of his career in Spain before moving to Dundee last summer, making 16 appearances for the Scottish side.

The 26-year-old, who is comfortable at both left-back and centre-back, was a favourite of new manager Marcelo Bielsea when they were both at Athletic Bilbao.

The 6ft Spaniard was only on a short-term deal at Dundee, but now the defender who is valued at £338,000 on Transfermarkt is available on a free and Bielsa could be keen on a reunion with his former player.

We’ll have to trust Bielsa on this one

On paper, the fact that Aurtenetxe dropped down to the Spanish second division and was released by Dundee doesn’t make great reading for Leeds fans.

At 26, you would expect him to be in the prime of his career but that doesn’t really seem the case.

However, he did make 105 appearances under Bielsa at Bilbao so clearly he must see something in the player.

There is little risk to the signing with no transfer fee, and if Bielsa can bring Aurtenetxe back to his best, it could be a very shrewd piece of business.
