The reported fee for this move is £5m.
This news didn’t go down well with the fanbase who were unhappy with their top scorer being linked with a move away, but Marcelo Bielsa’s comments towards the end of last season may show why the club shouldn’t be too worried about losing him.
After Leeds’ dip at the back end of last term, Bielsa stated that none of his players will be able to replicate their performances from last season, and he could have been alluding to his star striker.
“Remember what I say now because you’ll be able to verify it. You won’t find a single player in our team who would be able to reproduce the same level of performance in another season because we’ve been very demanding with them,” Bielsa said.
“They’ve given everything and they have figures I’m checking all the time which show what I’m saying is true. The players won’t be able to reproduce the levels they have shown in another season.”
Roofe may have netted 15 goals last season, but you’ve only got to look at his record before Bielsa’s arrival to see that he may not be able to keep that level of performance up.
Before the Argentine took charge at Elland Road the striker had netted just 14 goals in 88 games for the Whites, and if he does indeed slip back to that level then Leeds may find it hard to get £5m for him.
The 26-year-old was great last season and if he can keep up that form then the Whites will undoubtedly miss him, but after Bielsa’s comments, a look into his stats suggests that he may not be able to replicate the types of performances he showed in 2018/19.
