Former Leeds United player Danny Pugh stated that his old club have a great chance of winning the playoffs as he spoke exclusively to Football FanCast.
The Port Vale midfielder had two spells at Elland Road where the Whites failed to earn promotion, but he feels that they are now ready to return to the top flight.
The 36-year-old was optimistic about the Yorkshire club’s chances in the playoffs despite the fact that he rates all of their potential opponents.
“I think Leeds still have a very good chance of promotion through the playoffs,” Pugh told Football FanCast.
“I genuinely thought they were going up automatically, but it wasn’t to be.
“There are four very strong teams in the playoffs, but I believe Leeds can beat any of them on their day.”
Pugh is spot on when he says that Leeds can beat any of the teams in the playoffs on their day.
The Whites haven’t lost a single game this season against any of their remaining rivals, and they have also beaten Derby County three times in as many meetings this season.
But this Leeds team is a different animal to what started this season. Their form has fallen off since Christmas, and that is what eventually condemned them to to a spot outside the top two.
Of course, it is more than doable for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, especially after their first-leg win at Pride Park, but injuries to Adam Forshaw, Kemar Roofe and Tyler Roberts may prove to be the difference in the second leg.
Aston Villa are their most likely opponents in the final, and you have to say that they would be the toughest of the bunch. Dean Smith’s outfit have been electric these past few months and will undoubtedly push Leeds to their limits if the two sides meet at Wembley.
