Aston Villa are reportedly nearing a deal to bring back 37 year-old free agent John Terry, but Leeds should absolutely throw their hat in the ring.
Reports in The Birmingham Mail suggest Aston Villa are close to bringing Terry back to the club.
The Chelsea legend spent last season with Steve Bruce’s side, scoring once in 32 Championship appearances.
The report claims Bruce is now trying to convince the club’s new owners to bring Terry back, as his side have started the season with just nine points from six games, failing to keep a single clean sheet.
Leeds also need another centre back though, and bringing in Terry on a free signing would be the perfect solution.
As deadline day loomed, Leeds fans were desperate for reinforcements down the spine of the team. Izzy Brown has joined on loan to strengthen the midfield ranks, but most fans would agree they are still one centre back short.
Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper are both injury prone, and while Gaetano Berardi has started the season fantastically at centre back, it’s impossible to know if he will continue that form in what is an unnatural position.
Terry is certainly not the player he once was, but playing nearly two decades at the absolute highest level of football means he will have no problem playing out from the back for Bielsa’s Leeds.
The 37 year-old knows every trick in the book, so will also provide valuable teaching to the likes of Jansson and Cooper. He makes up for his lack of pace by reading the game superbly, and his title-winning experience could be vital down the stretch.
Bielsa has made a wonderful start to life at Elland Road, but an injury crisis at the back could be his biggest downfall, potentially devastating a promotion push. Signing an experienced leader who played 32 league games last season should be an absolute no brainer.
So, Leeds fans, do you think Terry on a free signing would be a smart move? Or is he too old? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
