Leeds are expected to pursue centre backs and centre midfielders before the loan window closes, but do they actually need another defender?
According to a recent report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, the spine of the team is the priority for Leeds in the closing stages of the transfer window, as Bielsa eyes moves for defenders and midfielders.
The transfer window got off to a slow start, but capturing the likes of Barry Douglas and Patrick Bamford was huge for the club, and they now look in great shape to mount a serious promotion charge.
While the injury to Adam Forshaw and departure of Ronaldo Vieira mean a midfield signing is still needed, the emergence of Jamie Shackleton as an option at right back means the depth in defence is perfectly fine.
The report claims Everton’s Matthew Pennington is a target, but the 23 year-old was poor during his loan spell at Elland Road last season, and the defence looked solid with Shackleton at right back and Ayling in the middle against Bolton.
Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson both look back to their best, and the versatility of Ayling and Gaetano Berardi means Bielsa has four quality options at centre back.
Victor Orta has taken plenty of stick for his transfer work at Elland Road, but sometimes is less is more, and trusting a young talent like Shackleton would be much better than signing Pennington just for the sake of it.
So, Leeds fans, what do you think? Is another centre back still needed? Or would you be happy for Ayling to fill in there? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
