Following a 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest as we entered 2019, the need for defensive reinforcements at Elland Road is apparent, despite Marcelo Bielsa downplaying their lack of depth at the back.
A summer move for Kyle Bartley that never came to fruition is looking like a big mistake now for the Whites, who have been forced into deploying defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips at centre-back – the 23-year-old is now suspended for three games after being dismissed against Forest.
Instead, Bartley swapped Wales for Birmingham as he made the switch to West Brom, but the 27-year-old has come under fire in recent weeks, with a poor showing against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend the final straw for many Baggies fans.
After completing the signing of Mason Holgate on loan from Everton, West Brom may no longer have a need for Bartley, leaving the door open for Leeds to make a shock raid for the big centre-back.
