Injury news: What Marcelo Bielsa should do after losing his top scorer

Marcelo Bielsa is faced with a familiar problem as Leeds face Aston Villa at Elland Road on Sunday lunchtime, having confirmed on Friday that Kemar Roofe will miss out through injury.

The attacker is once again out of action just two months after a knee ligament injury saw him miss almost six weeks of football.

Injured again

Roofe’s injuries have come at two of the most inconvenient times of the season.

The striker hadn’t even regained his spot in the starting XI since his return from his previous ailment, before it was announced that a hip injury would see him miss the Villa game.

It is currently unknown how long the striker will be out for but with the Yorkshire club seemingly play-off bound, their fans will be hoping their top scorer is back sooner rather than later.

Patrick Bamford has been the preferred striking option in recent weeks, but due to Leeds’ lack of depth up top this injury may turn out to be disastrous

Bielsa’s plan

This isn’t the first time Leeds’ number seven has been injured this season, but this time it comes in wildly different circumstances.

Last time Roofe was on the injured list his team were sitting comfortably in the top two.

Bielsa would often line up without any striker on the bench with the failsafe of Tyler Roberts being able to push up if anything happened to Bamford.

The former Middlesbrough striker will once again be the man Leeds look towards to lead their line in the next few weeks, but this time he should make sure all his bases are covered.

Unlike during his previous spell on the sidelines, the Whites are now chasing the pack in regards to automatic promotion, so Bielsa needs to line up with a striker on the bench in case he finds his team desperate for a goal late in a match.

Ryan Edmondson should make the matchday squad for the Villa game to give the Yorkshire club the option of extra firepower if they’re chasing a game.
