Leeds United fans have completely changed their minds about Victor Orta after an honest interview with Skybet.
Orta received a lot of criticism during his first season as director of football at Leeds due to poor transfers and two managerial appointments that didn’t work out with Thomas Christensen and Paul Heckingbottom both being sacked before the end of the season.
In the interview, Orta admitted to thinking about leaving after a poor first campaign but he decided to stay and that result paid dividends.
The director of football was a key man in courting Marcelo Bielsa and was one of the decision makers on his eventual appointment.
It turns out Orta had chased Bielsa at his previous clubs; when working at Zenit St Petersburg and Sevilla the Spaniard had pushed for the Argentine to take charge but numerous factors stopped the two linking up before coming to Elland Road.
“I know the manager because in the process which changed the coach at Sevilla I prepared a report to recommend him but he decided to go to Athletic Bilbao,” Orta said.
“In the process at Zenit I recommended to the board to hire him and we had a conversation after we finished with Andre Villas-Boas.
“People think about the results but even without the results it was an amazing appointment for this club because he increases the standards of the club in each minute.”
Indeed, Bielsa’s appointment ignited Leeds to push for promotion this season and as the Whites sit in second place in the Championship fans have been conceding that Orta has done a fantastic job this year after a shaky start.
Here’s what Leeds fans have been saying on Twitter, heaping praise on the man who became a scapegoat for last season’s woeful campaign…
This man deserves a lot of credit considering the stick he got last season

If you put a picture of Orta or Alioski up a year ago you’d be torn to shreds. Crazy how things have changed. Deserves the credit he will get

Fair play to him. I think some of the stick was probably deserved, some not so much, but our results were so bad last year I think it was easy to look for the negatives.
Deserves massive praise for helping us get Bielsa.

remember the knives being out for the bloke, without him there’s no Bielsa

I wish I could enjoy the journey. I don’t think I enjoyed Saturday until the final whistle blew. Then it dawned on me we have to do that another 7 times. Mental. Good on Victor though for sticking in there.
