Leeds United fans were treated to an incredible start to the season last weekend as Marcelo Bielsa’s side shocked Stoke and ran out 3-1 winners at Elland Road. However, after the transfer window shut on Thursday the fans on Twitter were disappointed that the club hadn’t brought in a new centre-back on a permanent deal.
Liam Cooper and full-back Gaetano Berardi started at the heart of the back four in the win over Leeds and look set to be Bielsa’s first choice partnership going forward, with Swedish international Pontus Jansson and academy graduate Conor Shaughnessy as the current back-up.
However, Leeds fans will now have to rely on the loan window, which remains open for EFL clubs until August 31, to secure a quality defender. According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the West Yorkshire side are interested in re-signing Matthew Pennington who spent last season on loan at Elland Road from Everton, however this doesn’t seem to be a popular deal with the fans.
Check out some of the best tweets from Leeds fans below who felt the club made a mistake by not recruiting a new defender.
Can’t pretend I’m not gutted we haven’t signed a quality CB. Feel it’s were we truely lack. I guess loan is the next best thing…depending on who it is. Another PJ or KB type would be lovely #lufc

For the record I am generally happy with thid window, I think we have improved compared to last season and Klich is like a new signing. I'm am a tad disappointed with the sale of Vieira and I felt we could have done with another CB and striker for strength and depth. #LUFC

Desperate for a cb, thought that should of been a priority after last season. Hefele went for peanuts from hudds today! Should of been all over that. Hopefully a decent loan signing as cover. Mot

Given that the transfer remit at #lufc was clearly not to have a negative spend, the business we have done is good. We're short though, certainly at CB. We'll need to avoid any major injuries to have any chance this season. The concern is that selling to buy is not what we need.

Overall grade: B+
A good transfer window. The additions of Douglas and Bamford can only be applauded but most fans would agree that signing a new centre-back on a permanent basis was high on the agenda. #LUFC
