Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa wasted no time in making changes during his side’s 2-2 draw with Swansea last night, as he hooked Kalvin Phillips off after just 28 minutes.
The 22-year-old central midfielder was making his 100th appearance for the West Yorkshire side but was at fault for Swansea’s first goal, as he lost the ball with little protection behind him and Oliver McBurnie poked home to finish off the counter attack.
Phillips was then booked 27 minutes in and his Argentine boss decided he had seen enough, despite the 22-year-old’s impressive start to the season. Leeds went on to equalise twice through Kemar Roofe and Pablo Hernandez either side of another McBurnie goal.
Leeds are still unbeaten this season under Bielsa, who has implemented his high-pressure and high-intensity system. Fans of the Whites on Twitter were impressed with their new manager’s decision to make a change so early on in the game, when things clearly weren’t clicking for Leeds against an impressive Swansea side.
Check out some of the best reactions to the substitution below.
I love it that he’s made that early change. Phillips was a liability, glad Bielsa could see it #lufc

Long trip, but worth it. A good point in a game which tested our resolve & character. Phillips role sussed early doors but changed quickly by Bielsa #lufc

Well played Marcelo Phillips has played utter rubbish, so you take him off and it’s not even half time yet. Fair play to him. #lufc

Bielsa doesn't mess about. He whipped 100 appearance man Kalvin Phillips off after 25 minutes and then substituted Kemar after he'd scoring his fourth goal last night. Certainly keeping the lads on their toes.

Bielsa was right to hook Phillips yesterday, as good as he's been in other games he just wasn't up to much. Surprised Bielsa has gone so unchanged and left KP in every game, inc. the cup. As long as KP doesn't dwell on this and accepts MB's decision we will be alright #LUFC

I do agree but bielsa showed with Phillips he will no accept playing badly.
I bet the players will be training till midnight today

A Leeds team that was patient despite going behind. The Phillips substitution was spot on. Saw the threat from the opposition and dealt with it, Plus he-was on a yellow. Shackleton showed his maturity. Both sides could have nicked it 1-1 fair result #LUFC Roofe #dynamite

Bielsa showed how good tactically he was. Soon as he subbed Phillips we looked better. He played a makeshift defense and still got a point. We are better organised. Could see shaugnessy playing on Saturday
