It is hard to think of a worse PR move in football history than the decision by Leeds United to change their historic club crest to a more modern design earlier this year.
Despite insisting that 10,000 Leeds fans were consulted on the new crest, the finished design was widely condemned by media, pundits and supporters of teams around the world.
Following a petition to stop the change and a furious fan outcry on social media, the club revoked the design and said they would reconsider and re-evaluate the change.
On Thursday morning, almost a month after the initial debacle, the club have released a much-anticipated statement which read;
Due to the volume of ideas and designs submitted by fans and their focus around celebrating our 100-year anniversary, we can confirm that we will now be introducing a new club crest on the shirt for the 2019/2020 centenary season and beyond.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all fans for the inspiration they have provided which, following further consultation with supporters’ groups, will form the basis of a democratic vote later this year.
After hearing the news that the club would delay the new crest and put the final design up for vote, Leeds fans took to Twitter to express their delight…
Right decision. Better time to introduce it and gives us all the more reason to concentrate on what’s on the pitch. Club need to be putting all the effort in getting us out of this division and then we can look at stadium enhancements/new crests. Get it right on the pitch first.

I've never been so relieved to see Leeds bottle it

Smart considered decision. No need to rush something so important especially after the first effort.

Probably the right thing to do. At least you didn't waste loads of people's time over it 🙈

Crest vote abandoned for now, good 👍

Good, and let's face it winning the championship in the centenary year with a united fan base was the plan all along wasn't it?
