Italian reports this week said Leeds have agreed a fee for Jerry Mbakogu, but fans are now breathing a sigh of relief after one reliable journalist said the move for the misfiring striker is dead.
Leeds fans were not convinced when reports suggested they had negotiated a bargain deal for Mbakogu, who scored eight goals for Carpi last season.
The striker’s agent has described him as the next Didier Drogba, but plenty of fans had their concerns about a player who has struggled to score in a lesser European league, pointing to Caleb Ekuban as an example of why they should only pursue proven talents.
It seems those fans have now been vindicated, as Phil Hay of the Yorkshire Evening Post says Leeds have formally notified Carpi that they will not be pursuing the striker.
Marcelo Bielsa is reportedly eyeing up a deal for Derby’s Matej Vydra, so Mbakogu would likely be a secondary option, but nonetheless he wouldn’t have been the most exciting signing in the world.
Fans are desperate to see some proper ambition from the club, and they think they’ve dodged a bullet by dumping the chase for the Nigerian.
