Before the transfer window started it was thought that Leeds would be targeting a goalkeeper, a winger and a striker.
However, a recent report indicates there may be another position that they look to strengthen this month, and it’s one they could really do with bolstering.
Football Insider are reporting that the Whites are after signing Rangers defender Connor Goldson, either this month or at the end of the season.
Unfortunately, Leeds aren’t the only Championship outfit in the running for the centre-back’s signature as the site have also stated that Fulham want to sign him.
It’s thought the London club are about to announce the signing of Huddersfield’s Terence Kongolo, and with Michael Hector, Alfie Mawson and Tim Ream already providing enough depth in that position they may not be prioritising another defensive signing.
It may sound strange considering that Leeds have the second-best defensive record in the Championship this season, but the Whites do need a centre-back through the door.
At the end of this term, Ben White is scheduled to go back to Brighton, and reports indicate that Gaetano Berardi isn’t going to be offered a new contract with his deal expiring this summer.
That means that Leeds currently only have one senior centre-back signed beyond the end of this campaign. While signing the 27-year-old Goldson seems a little unnecessary at the moment, in the long run it’s exactly the type of player the Whites need through the door.
Whether or not this deal happens remains to be seen, but it’d certainly make sense as Marcelo Bielsa’s centre-back situation beyond 2019/20 is currently quite precarious.
