Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa should try to persuade Chelsea club captain Gary Cahill to sign a pre-contract agreement with the Whites in January that would see him join next summer on a free transfer.
Chelsea have started the season brilliantly under new boss Maurizio Sarri, taking maximum points from the former Napoli boss’ first four league games that has left them in second place in the Premier League.
Equally, Leeds have begun their Championship campaign under new man Marcelo Bielsa in flying form and sit top of the table on goal difference with four wins and two draws from their first six league games.
Bielsa has brought his trademark high-tempo, high-pressing system to Elland Road and his players have adapted to it far quicker than anyone could have reasonably expected. Kemar Roofe has been on fire up front and is keeping new signing Patrick Bamford out of the starting XI, but it is down the other end of the pitch at centre-back where many expected Bielsa to strengthen.
Bielsa has generally stuck with right-back Gaetano Berardi at centre-back in the Championship so far and has then rotated fellow full-back Luke Ayling, Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper alongside the Swiss international.
However, with the high-tempo football being demanded by the Argentine manager he will need to add to his squad at some point. With the way Leeds are going they could even be back in the Premier League next season, although there is a long way to go yet. The Whites’ hierarchy should start looking at the prospect of bringing Cahill in though as he offers huge experience and has been a fantastic defender for both Chelsea and England, with 61 caps for his country.
Although Chelsea may have started the season well, this has been bad news for the 32-year-old who is yet to play a game under Sarri and is struggling to get into the matchday squads. A move to Leeds next summer agreed in January could be the best for all parties.
