Leeds may want to change their mind on Gaetano Berardi

Leeds United have been knocking on the door of the Premier League over the past 18 months, and Monday represented this group of players’ first opportunity to play against top-flight opposition since Marcelo Bielsa’s appointment.

With the Whites sitting in first and looking likely to go up this term, the Argentine has to figure out which players can do a job for him in the Premier League and which can’t.

Unfortunately, reports over the past few months indicated that the manager had already made his mind up on one player, but Monday’s showing may mean that he wants to make a U-turn on his previous decision.

Of course, we’re talking about Gaetano Berardi.

The Swiss defender is into the last year of his contract, and the club reportedly have no plans on renewing his deal unless they aren’t promoted to the Premier League this term.

However, his performance against Arsenal showed that he still has something to offer in this team, even in the top flight.

Can you name which season Leeds signed this flop?

The 31-year-old played against a frontline consisting of someone who has lifted the World Cup, a £72m signing and a former Ligue 1 Golden Boot winner. Against that attack, he more than held his own.

Three interceptions, three clearances and one blocked shot were three key stats in what was a solid performance from the defender as he proved that he’s capable of dealing with the best that the top-flight has to offer.

Should Leeds offer Berardi a new contract?

Would Berardi be a starter for Leeds in the top-tier? Probably not, but Monday proved that he’s good enough to be a backup option and with the Whites only having one senior centre-back signed on beyond this season, keeping the Swiss wouldn’t be a bad thing.

In other news, one pre-match decision from Marcelo Bielsa worried a number of Leeds fans.
