Leeds United headed into Saturday’s match against Ipswich Town knowing that a victory would help boost their chances of securing a playoff spot.
Thomas Christiansen’s side, though, did not take a single point at the final whistle as Ipswich earned a 1-0 win.
The major talking point of the match came when the contest was goalless in the first half.
Eunan O’Kane was sent off by the referee in the 37th minute after appearing to headbutt Jonas Knudsen in an off-the-ball incident at Portman Road.
The 27-year-old midfielder was given a straight red card, and after the match, the manager confirmed to reporters that the club intend to appeal it.
The Irishman’s dismissal may have played a huge role in the result as Bersant Celina scored the one and only goal of the game when Leeds were down to 10 men.
On Twitter, Leeds fans gave their thoughts on the incident, and understandably, plenty were furious with O’Kane’s actions.
O'Kane doesn't deserve the shirt. This shows opposition teams that he can be got at. A tight play off battle and our opponents now know they can target him for a reaction. I can forgive a mistimed tackle or a hand ball. We need a mentally tough squad, no weaknesses #lufc

Why are people still denying it was a headbutt…. it’s as clear as day and makes O’Kane look a complete tit! No need at all, especially over a goal kick 🙄 #LUFC

Zero complaints with today bar the sending off. For me, it’s as soft as they come but very naive by O’Kane. Seriously need some quality reinforcements now before the end of Jan #lufc

O’Kane needs his arse kicked for going that. We were well on top at the time. #lufc

It was a sending off. No question

O’Kane could have walked away and didn’t so the idiot deserved it. TC should stop feeling hard done by and teach them some discipline. But then again he doesn’t seem able to teach them much at all does he?
