Leeds United will be without defender Pontus Jansson after The FA made the call to ban the Swede for one match.
The suspension rules the 27-year-old out of Leeds’ Championship clash with Ipswich Town on Wednesday night, while also handing Jansson a £1,000 fine for his comments to Sky Sports directed at the referee.
In an emotional display straight after the final whistle of his side’s one-all draw with Brentford, the Leeds regular described the result as robbery. “This was a robbery from the referee so it feels bad. Do you think it should be happy? No chance.”
Despite there being some truth in his words, after the referee failed to send Moses Odubajo off and awarded Brentford a dubious penalty, the FA looked dimly on the player’s comments amidst the ongoing push for respect for referees.
Leeds, meanwhile, certainly are not overly happy about the decision. In the club’s announcement that they would not be appealing the ban, they said: “the club sees no value in making an appeal.”
“All parties agree that the language used by Pontus in his flash interview after the game was inappropriate, however we also feel that a warning or a fine would have been a fairer outcome, especially given the following mitigating circumstances which we outlined to the FA in a letter following the charge.”
While the Whites may not see any point in making an appeal, fans of the Elland Road outfit certainly took frustration in the timing of the suspension, after the defender who had equalised against Brentford was travelling back from the birth of his daughter.
@EFL YOU ARE CORRUPT, HOW does Jansson get a one match ban and a fine, and yet Brentford get nothing for a dive and a bias referee, I mean seriously what is the point of us playing if everyone is against us but the fans and the players. #lufc #mot

Not one Leeds fan thinks you did anything wrong, I think they agree with your comments honestly. Have a good few days with the fam and be back ready for Forest. ?? #MOT

What the @EFL have done to Jansson is a disgrace, the ban is no more than we expected because it’s Leeds but to let him fly back and leave his new born baby is shocking, no more post match interviews @LUFC #MOT

This farce is absolute proof of the EFL’s into #LUFC agenda, they will hate it when we go top 2 again tonight: Leeds United vent frustration at FA after Pontus Jansson lands one-match ban over “robbery” remarks https://t.co/3f9CF251Sf

It’s usual for comments like that to receive at least a match ban and a fine, however with everything else that had happened around the situation it seems so unfair others got away with any problem while Jansson was only being honest of the horrific refereeing that day.

Dear @EFL @FA I’m deeply worried with the inconsistency within your organisations. Can you explain how a clear headbutt by Canos seen clearly by millions on TV goes unpunished ? Then you fine and give a 1 match ban to Jansson for a heat of the moment comment !

Jansson getting a one match ban is a joke
