Leeds will still need a Jansson replacement if Happe signs

According to reports from The Sun, Leeds United are interested in signing Dan Happe from Leyton Orient.

This comes just days after Pontus Jansson was linked with a move away from the club, but the Whites will still have to sign someone to replace the Swede if they land the Leyton Orient man.

What’s the story?

Leeds face a lot of competition to sign the highly-rated youngster as Tottenham, Norwich and Leicester are all looking at him.

The late Justin Edinburgh was full of praise for the defender last season as he said: “Whenever he has stepped in this season he has been an absolute colossus and class act.

“Again he has stepped in with a new partner, so when he has come into the team he is not playing with someone who has played regularly, it is someone who hasn’t played as well and I think he is so mature beyond his years.“

Need another player

Even though the praise he received from Edinburgh makes it seem like he is ready-made for a higher standard of football, it may not be that easy for Leeds.

Leyton Orient are reluctant to let their youngster go without a fight, and they have already rejected an offer from Spurs. The O’s want their young sensation back on loan for the season if he leaves this summer, as per The Sun.

Therefore, if Leeds sell Jansson and sign Happe he wouldn’t be a suitable replacement as firstly he may not even be at the club for the 2019/20 campaign, and secondly he has never appeared above League Two level.

In a season where the Whites will be targeting promotion they can’t risk lining up as a weaker side than they were last term, so if they do end up selling Jansson they would likely need to buy another defender even if they agree a deal for the Orient man.
