Ruben Loftus-Cheek proved once again on Thursday that he is too good to be warming Chelsea’s bench, and Leeds should make an ambitious loan swoop in January.
Leeds fans are desperate for a bit more attacking impetus from midfield, as the Whites have often failed to convert their dominance in possession into quality chances in front of goal.
Loftus-Cheek meanwhile has played just 94 minutes in the Premier League this season, but dominated Chelsea’s Europa League win over PAOK on Thursday.
The 22-year-old would undoubtedly be superb in the Championship, and a short-term loan deal until the end of the season could be a win for all parties, as the Blues could trust they are leaving their starlet with a world-class manager in Marcelo Bielsa.
It may seem crazy to try luring someone who could comfortably perform in the Premier League to a top Championship side, but wouldn’t you have said the same thing about Bielsa not too long ago?
Aforementioned, Loftus-Cheek simply hasn’t had a chance in the Premier League this season, but his performances in the Europa League show he would absolutely boss the Championship.
The 6 ft 3 in youngster’s unique blend of physical dominance and technical prowess would be perfect in Bielsa’s possession-based system, and his ability to score goals from midfield would take the goalscoring pressure of Kemar Roofe.
So far this season, only Pablo Hernandez and Mateusz Klich are helping Roofe carry the goalscoring load, and Loftus-Cheek has four goals in just 344 minutes of action for Chelsea this season, which is a goal involvement every 86 minutes.
The 10-cap England international has excellent vision and passing ability, can dribble past players with ease, and most definitely has the physicality to play in a Championship midfield.
A six-month loan deal would ensure Loftus-Cheek plays 90 minutes every week, Leeds get one of the country’s finest midfield prospects and Chelsea get to judge their young star in a tried and tested system.
Frank Lampard has shown exactly how effective loaning players from the Premier League’s big six can be, as the likes of Mason Mount and Harry Wilson have been superb for the Rams this season, and Bielsa should absolutely follow suit.
So, Leeds fans, do you think you can pull this one off in January? Let us know your thought by voting in the poll below…
