Opinion: Leeds should make shock move for soon-to-be free agent Fabregas

Leeds fans will be desperate for at least one huge signing if they can secure promotion back to the top flight, and Cesc Fabregas’ situation at Chelsea should have Marcelo Bielsa on high alert.

What’s the word?

According to L’Equipe (via Mirror), Fabregas is unhappy at Chelsea and wants to leave the club in the New Year.

The Spanish international has played just 138 Premier League minutes so far this season, and the report claims Thierry Henry is hoping to bring him to Monaco.

However, the French outfit currently sit 19thin Ligue 1 with just 13 points from 17 games, and the supremely gifted Fabregas may prefer the chance to stay in England’s top flight.

The legendary midfielder will be a 32 year-old free agent by the time the summer rolls around, and the Whites should absolutely throw their hat in the ring.

How would he fit?

While Fabregas doesn’t have the athleticism to be the box-to-box superstar he was at Arsenal, he could perform a similar role for Leeds as he has for Chelsea, dictating the game from deeper in midfield.

The 110-cap Spaniard has played his best football at Stamford Bridge with a hard-working defensive midfielder alongside him, a role Kalvin Phillips would be perfect for.

His supreme calmness on the ball, passing range and vision would more than make up for his lack of athleticism, adding an extra creative force for the Whites to break down those deep-lying defences.

Bielsa will also want some experienced heads in the dressing room if his side do go up, and Fabregas’ trophy-winning experience and intelligence woulde provide a huge boost for the crop of young stars forcing their way through at Elland Road.

Bringing Fabregas to the club would be the coup of the century if Bielsa could pull it off, so Leeds fans, can it happen? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
