After Leeds duo Conor Shaughnessy and Lewie Coyle completed loan moves away from Elland Road on Monday – the former joined Scottish Premiership outfit Hearts and thus left the Whites even more stretched at the back – the need for squad reinforcements is apparent, whether Marcelo Bielsa likes it or not. We, here at Football Fancast, think a move for Chelsea’s Ethan Ampadu would solve a lot of the Argentine boss’ problems.
Well, the departure of Shaughnessy, while beneficial for the player – he has made just one appearance for the Championship leaders this season – is surely a loss to a team who are already pretty thin at the back.
The 22-year-old centre-back may not have been part of the picture as such but his exit means Bielsa has one less defender to call upon should any of his starting options be sidelined; this lack of depth could be detrimental going into the second half of the season.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are scrambling to keep hold of one of their brightest young prospects in Callum Hudson-Odoi as Bayern Munich lodge another big bid. If the Bavarian outfit manage to steal the winger away it will surely be one of the smartest signings of the window, however Bielsa could top it by bringing in Hudson-Odoi’s teammate, Ampadu, on loan.
While he may currently be serving a three-match ban for his dismissal in the first half of a 4-2 loss to Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day, Kalvin Phillips has been a pretty solid player for the Peacocks this season as they push for the title and promotion to the Premier League.
Like Phillips, Ampadu can be deployed at the heart of defence or at the base of midfield but what local lad Phillips may lack, the Welsh international makes up for in abundance.
The 18-year-old possesses composure on the ball beyond his years, has a decent passing range and his versatility could make him hugely important to Bielsa – as Phillips has been this season.
Ampadu isn’t getting a look in at Stamford Bridge and, should Chelsea lose Hudson-Odoi, they should realise they must do everything they can to give their young players the minutes they deserve, whether that be in blue or elsewhere; this makes the likelihood of pinching the youngster on loan far greater.
