Former Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy has slammed Patrick Bamford on talkSPORT (Tuesday, 11:15) after his dive against Aston Villa on Sunday caused Anwar El Ghazi to receive his marching orders from Stuart Attwell.
As an old school advocate of the beautiful game, of course, the former Fulham captain has no time for diving.
Bamford’s dive against Villa at the weekend can only be described as embarrassing and stupid.
Murphy said on Jim White’s TalkSPORT show on Monday morning (Via HITC): “There’s no excuse for what he did. It just shows that academic intelligence doesn’t mean much.”
The 42-year-old slammed Bamford’s stupidity whilst making reference to his academic intellect, after it was revealed last year that the Leeds striker had an offer from Harvard University in the USA to study business.
Murphy hit the nail on the head when he said that his academic intelligence didn’t play a part in his decision on Sunday.
For a man who reportedly speaks four languages, Bamford didn’t use any of his brain power when he decided to take a dive against Villa at Elland Road.
Unfortunately, diving is a part of football and can prove to be fruitful at times, yet this may be an occurrence where play-acting comes back to bite the offender.
Leeds’ fate had pretty much already been decided, they were headed for the playoffs unless there was a huge swing in goal difference on the final day of the season.
The former Middlesbrough striker may well have jeopardised the Whites’ playoff chances with his dive. Bamford has been handed a two-game ban for his display, meaning that Marcelo Bielsa may be without his favoured number nine for the playoff semi-final first leg.
