Leeds’ Barry Douglas issue made worse by two further problems

Leeds United never seem to have a fully-fit squad, do they? At one point last season, they’d had as many as 31 separate issues.

Every week as Marcelo Bielsa gears up for his press conference we’re dreading to hear which player has picked up an injury this week, and on Thursday he confirmed that another man has succumbed to a problem.

What’s happening?

Barry Douglas has worked his way back into Marcelo Bielsa’s plans in recent weeks, beginning Leeds’ last league game – his first start since Wigan away back in August.

However, he’s not going to be picked for consecutive matches as the Argentine confirmed that he’s been struck with an injury this week.

Usually, an injury to a man who has started just four games this term wouldn’t be too much of an issue, but at the moment, Leeds could really do without the Scot being absent.

Made even worse

Leeds’ left-back spot has been painted as a bit of a problem position as of late.

Phil Hay wrote a lengthy piece in The Athletic detailing United’s woes in that position, and fans have had their own complaints about Ezgjan Alioski after the Sheffield Wednesday game.

How much did Leeds pay to sign Adam Forshaw from Middlesbrough?

The thing is, Leeds’ problems could easily be solved if there weren’t injuries in midfield.

Stuart Dallas has started every game for the Yorkshire club so far this term, and his presence when he has played at the back has helped the defence. They’ve conceded just nine times in the 13 outings the Northern Irishman has played at both left and right-back this term.

However, due to injuries to Adam Forshaw and Tyler Roberts, Dallas has been needed in the midfield for the majority of this season, meaning that Leeds have had to play either Alioski or Douglas at left-back most of the time.

An injury to Douglas hurts ahead of this weekend, but it’s made even worse due to the fact that Dallas can’t step in to replace him. For now, they’ll have to make do with Alioski.

In other news, Jack Harrison’s future could be affected by Leeds completing this eight-figure deal.
