The Chalkboard: Leif Davis might not start for Leeds as Derby refuse to rule Harry Wilson out

Derby County manager Frank Lampard has refused to rule Harry Wilson out despite the fact that he is a major doubt for the Championship clash against Leeds United at Elland Road on Friday night, and that could be bad news for young Whites left-back Leif Davis.

On the chalkboard

Well, it was the 19-year-old who stepped in at full-back in the absence of the injured Barry Douglas for the FA Cup defeat against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road last Sunday, making just his second appearance of the season for the Yorkshire outfit.

While he featured for 87 minutes at Loftus Road and performed well despite being inexperienced, it would be a huge ask to ask him to start a Championship match against the Rams on Friday night – especially if Wilson, who has scored 10 goals in 24 appearances in all competitions this term, is fit.

Speaking to the press ahead of the clash, Lampard said of the 21-year-old: “He’s been training with the physio today. Because of his influence, I’ll leave it as long as we can so see if he can take part.”

What does this mean for Davis?

Had the Chelsea legend ruled the Liverpool loanee out completely Bielsa certainly would have been more comfortable about starting the teenager at Elland Road on Friday – especially if experienced captain Liam Cooper returns to the starting XI.

However, the fact that Wilson – who has largely featured on the right wing or on the right of a midfield three in more recent times – hasn’t been dismissed and could still start on the right wing in Yorkshire means that the Argentine manager can’t afford to take that risk, and he needs a more experienced option there just in case.

20-year-old Tom Pearce doesn’t really fit the bill either and may even be behind Davis in the pecking order having been subbed on and then off again against Rangers last weekend, and having used him there before it might well be Ezgjan Alioski that is deemed the best man to deal with the Rams wide man even though he is primarily a winger himself.
