The Verdict: Would Jon Swift be a good fit under Marcelo Bielsa?

According to Football Insider, Leeds United are preparing a £7million bid for Reading midfielder John Swift, who has continued to show flashes of brilliance this season despite his side spending much of the campaign battling relegation.

But Leeds are perhaps the Championship’s most idiosyncratic club under the guidance of Marcelo Bielsa, who demands incredible levels of energy from his players, and could well be playing Premier League football next season.

So, would the 23-year-old be a good fit under the Argentine at Elland Road? Football FanCast’s writers deliver their verdicts below…

Billy Meyers

“Swift is the perfect type of player that Bielsa should be targeting. The Englishman is young, has a huge ceiling for improvement, and would be able to slot in immediately and make an impact. Reading’s No.10 is a composed, classy operator who also works hard, making him ideal for Bielsa as well as the exact type of player that Leeds are missing. After the pursuit of Dan James, at least Leeds are targeting the right profile of player – young, hungry and with room to grow.”

James Beavis

“He would be a brilliant addition whichever league Leeds and Bielsa find themselves in next season. In a struggling team he has been one of Reading’s shining lights, and the fact that he can play in a range of central midfield roles means he is perfect for Bielsa’s system. He works hard and has the creative eye Mateusz Klich doesn’t, and his presence in the XI and the quality he would provide would help Bamford reach the next level.”

Ben Goodwin

“Swift is exactly the type of player Leeds should be pursuing. At just 23 and capable of playing multiple positions, he ticks all the boxes for becoming a Bielsa player. He is versatile, has a fantastic work ethic, has the composure on the ball to link play in tight spaces, and of course has an eye for an incisive pass as well, something the Whites have lacked at times against deep defences this season. Signing Swift should be a no-brainer for the Elland Road outfit.”

Jack Saville

“Leeds would sign another Samu Saiz if they swooped for John Swift: a player with immense raw potential but a frustrating inability to perform on a consistent basis. It’s easy to see why Marcelo Bielsa has identified him as a potential signing and there is certainly an argument to be made that the Argentine could improve him, but Leeds cannot hang around waiting for Swift to find consistency if they reach the Premier League. Klich should be worried if Leeds do sign him, though, as it’s likely his position would be under threat”
