Transfer Focus: Leeds’ excuse for selling O’Kane could lead to more departures

According to Football Insider, Leeds United want to sell Eunan O’Kane due to his ‘average technique’.

While it isn’t that controversial for the Whites to want to be rid of the Irishman, to state that his technique is their reason for selling him is a bit baffling.

Not given a chance

It is somewhat surprising that Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t looked more closely at O’Kane during his tenure as Leeds boss.

The midfielder is quite a handy player, and if he was given the right coaching, he could be a good addition to any Championship squad.

He’s had Premier League experience and looked decent when playing for the Yorkshire club before Bielsa’s arrival, but was scapegoated towards the end of Paul Heckingbottom’s reign.

The Argentine almost immediately cast him aside upon his arrival at Elland Road. He didn’t give him a shirt number and sent him out on loan to Luton.

Given the 63-year-old’s tendency to get the best out of players it is bizarre that he hasn’t attempted to give O’Kane a chance, and it appears the Irishman’s time at Elland Road is now over.

Average technique

The Football Insider report states that the midfielder’s ‘average technique’ has been declared as the reason why he is deemed surplus to requirements at the club.

This would be a reasonable explanation, but for the fact the Whites have several players whose technique has to be described as average at best.

Even the most optimistic of Leeds fans couldn’t say that the likes of Ezgjan Alioski, Adam Forshaw or Patrick Bamford have exceptional technique on the pitch.

Getting rid of O’Kane may be a bit premature, he hasn’t been given a real chance to play under Bielsa and perhaps if he did, he could surprise a few of his doubters.

If Leeds are to get rid of the Ireland international due to his ‘technique’, then they should be preparing for a squad clearout as there are many players in the squad who fit that description.
