Danny Pugh on Billy Sharp’s potential move back to Leeds

Leeds United are in need of a striker after Eddie Nketiah’s recall.

The Whites are in a real precarious position where they don’t have a lot of money to spend in the market, but they need someone who can provide the goals needed to drag them over the line and into the Premier League.

One man who has been linked in recent times is Billy Sharp, and he certainly knows a lot about being promoted to the Premier League as he’s gone up with both Southampton and Sheffield United.

We spoke to former Leeds man Danny Pugh about his thoughts on United re-signing their former player.

“He’s proven. He’s definitely proven at that level, he’s got a great goalscoring record, and he’s been promoted several times, so I can see why he’s being linked. He’s an experienced lad and he knows the division, so I can definitely see why his name is being thrown into the mix.” Pugh exclusively told Football Fancast.

How many times have Leeds United won the FA Cup?

However, despite being promoted twice, Sharp has never done it in the Premier League. He has just one top-flight goal to his name, but Pugh believes that the Whites can’t go wrong if they sign him on a short-term deal or on loan.

“If he’s just someone for six months, until the end of the season, and gets them promoted on a short term deal or a loan I don’t think it’d be a bad thing.

“Obviously, you’d rather someone you know they can take that step up, or someone who’s at an age where they can learn and progress at that level.

“If you’re going long-term you’d want someone younger or someone at a Premier League level, but if you’re trying to get over the line just in that six months you can’t go wrong with Billy Sharp.”

Whether or not Leeds pull off this deal remains to be seen, but Pugh clearly believes that this is a move that certainly wouldn’t hamper United’s chances of going up this season.

In other news, Leeds’ opposition may be playing into their hands with one tactic.
