Middlesbrough need to score at least once at Villa Park on Tuesday night, so should Patrick Bamford get the nod up front?

Middlesbrough travel to Aston Villa on Tuesday knowing they must score at least once to make the playoff final after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the Riverside.

Luckily for Tony Pulis’s side, away goals do not count “double” in the football league playoffs, meaning a 1-0 win would be enough to send the tie to extra time.

That said, Boro’s attack was completely stifled by the Villa defence on Saturday evening, as the hosts enjoyed most of the ball but only really created a few half chances.

Britt Assombalonga missed a few difficult chances, and with so much on the line it could be times to switch things up.

This does not necessarily mean benching Assombalonga, who has 15 goals this season, but the 13-goal Bamford surely deserves a chance as well, even it means Tony Pulis changing his ways and opting for two up front.

Bamford is versatile, clinical, and works hard for the team, and you can never have too many goalscorers on the pitch in a must-win match.

Whether it be as part of a front two, front three, or playing just in behind Assombalonga, Boro should take the risk and give Bamford a start.
