Middlesbrough announced on Tuesday that Paddy McNair had become their first signing of this summer’s transfer window.
Indeed, the 23-year-old, who was also linked with Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion, has joined Boro on a four-year contract.
Injury restricted McNair to just 16 Championship appearances last season, but he scored five times for Sunderland, and was always going to leave following their relegation to League One.
McNair, who is a 20-time Northern Ireland international, actually played 27 times for Manchester United’s first team before making the move to Sunderland.
And there is absolutely no question that he is a star at Championship level.
It is shaping up to be a very interesting summer transfer window for Boro, with players arriving – potentially Bristol City’s Aden Flint – and also players departing, with Adama Traore amongst those expected to move on.
