Middlesbrough are now only in the Championship play-off positions on goal difference following their 1-0 defeat against fellow promotion hopefuls Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night, and Boro fans destroyed striker Jordan Hugill on Twitter for his performance.

As the 26-year-old has become accustomed to this season, he was selected to start up top on his own by Tony Pulis in what was a defensively-minded line-up in Yorkshire.

The West Ham United loanee was often left isolated against Chris Wilder's side, while he also failed to take the chances he did get when they did fall his way.

With six goals in 25 league appearances for the Teesside outfit during the current campaign he is hardly a prolific centre-forward, but he has continually kept his place in the XI despite facing competition from the likes of Britt Assombalonga for the lone striker berth.

Middlesbrough supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on Hugill's latest display, and while one said the team "played with 9 men" in relation to Hugill and the sending off of Daniel Ayala, another described him as "a waste of a shirt".

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
