Middlesbrough booked their spot in the second round of the League Cup with a penalty-shootout win over Notts County on Tuesday night.

Indeed, the two teams played out a 3-3 draw at the Riverside Stadium before the Championship outfit triumphed 4-3 on penalties.

It was a big night for 21-year-old Nathan McGinley, who made his first-team debut for Boro against the League Two club.

The 6ft 3in defender came through the youth system at the Riverside Stadium before signing his first professional contract back in 2015.

McGinley spent time on loan with Wycombe Wanderers in League Two last season, but is now back with Boro, and will be looking for regular action this season.

The versatile defender took to social media in the aftermath of the Notts County match, and the Boro fans were on hand to pay tribute to his performance.
