Middlesbrough announced via their official club website on Thursday that they have completed the signing of midfielder John Obi Mikel on a short-term deal, and Boro fans were quick to react to the news on Twitter.

The Nigeria international was a free agent after terminating his contract, as per Goal, with Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin Teda earlier this month, and now he has joined up with the Championship promotion hopefuls.

The former Chelsea midfielder spent two years in Asia after his 11-year spell with the Blues finally ended in 2017 when he found first-team minutes hard to come by under the boss Antonio Conte, and he will hope for different fortunes with Tony Pulis at the Riverside Stadium.

Known as being a defensively-minded midfielder throughout his career, the 31-year-old did play in a more progressive capacity for his country during the 2018 World Cup, so it remains to be seen where he will play for Boro.

Middlesbrough supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the move, and while one said "hello mid-table", another labelled the deal as "madness".
