According to the Press Association, via BT Sport, Middlesbrough are keen to bring Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers to the Riverside Stadium before the January transfer window closes at the end of the month.

What's the word, then?

Well, the Press Association report that Boro boss Tony Pulis is keen to add some more creativity and boost his side’s current lowly goal tally of 28 as they aim for promotion back to the Premier League, and Sawyers is a player he admires.

Press Association report that no offer is on the table as of yet though as the Teesside outfit mull over a potential bid for the St Kitts & Nevis international, who has 18 months remaining on his contract at Griffin Park.

The report adds that Aston Villa and their manager – Dean Smith – whom the 27-year-old excelled under during the duo's spells together at Brentford and Walsall, are also keen on a deal but they may have to wait until the summer as they need to sell before they can buy.

Would he be a good signing for Boro?

There is no doubt that he has the creative mind and he has shown it on occasions for Brentford and Walsall, but it isn’t as though he is prolific in terms of goals and assists.

Albeit featuring in a slightly deeper midfield role than usual for the Bees this term, Sawyers is yet to find the net and has provided just the three assists in 26 appearances in all competitions for the Championship strugglers.

He has 16 assists and eight goals in 115 outings in total for the west London outfit, and in that respect it is difficult to see him making himself a real star for Middlesbrough – especially with Pulis' famous conservative style of play.
