Premier League confirmed starting Xis: Sunderland vs Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough’s Premier League ascension at the end of last season has brought a typically English derby back to the top flight.

There’s little love lost between Tees-Wear rivals Middlesbrough and Sunderland and their expected roles in this season’s relegation battle will only further amplify tensions when the two sides kick off at 1.30pm this afternoon.

Despite only gaining promotion from the Championship a matter of months ago, Middlesbrough are in seemingly better health entering today’s clash.

They drew against a decent Stoke side last week and have made some shrewd signings over the summer, most notably three-time Champions League winner Victor Valdes and former Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are still adjusting to life under a new manager in David Moyes, whose late appointment has slowed up the club’s efforts in the transfer market somewhat.

That being said, the form book goes out of the window in derbies and the Black Cats boast the home advantage. So who’ll come out on top this afternoon?

Perhaps the confirmed starting Xis, announced on Twitter just moments ago, can give us a hint at today’s result:

Probably the biggest talking point is Moyes issuing full Premier League debuts to three of his summer signings; Papy Djilbodji, Paddy McNair and Adnan Januzaj.

At the same time, Lamine Kone, who rejected a contract offer from the club earlier this week, is not a part of his matchday squad.

Meanwhile, Brad Guzan, Adam Forshaw and Cristhian Stuani take Valdes, Martin de Roon and Albert Adomah’s places in the Boro starting line up.
