In a rather disappointing turn of events, FC Porto's forward Moussa Marega walked off the pitch midway through his team's win at Vitoria Guimaraes following a barrage of racial insults from the stands.

The 28-year-old player headed to the dugout in the 69th minute, nine minutes after scoring Porto's winner in the 2-1 victory which has somewhat fallen into the shadow of another case of racism in football.

From green pitch to silver screen: What productions did these famous footballers star in?

Marega pointed his thumbs down and then raised his middle fingers towards the crowd, expressing his annoyance and irritation and rightfully so.

Middlesbrough's Rudy Gestede was among those from the footballing world to send the player a long and heartfelt message of support, condemning the actions of those fans in the process.

He posted it on

Gestede talked about how sport should convey openness, sharing and solidarity and that this is unacceptable.

He also mentioned how even one incident involving racism is already one too many and this should never happen again but, unfortunately, the official bodies are still struggling to contain it.

Here's his message translated in full:

"Sport conveys values of sharing, openness, solidarity. What happened once again on the football pitch field is unacceptable.

"I support Moussa Marega.

"It is one more and one too many.

"@marega11 Courage to you!

"#NoToRacism"

Marega is, sadly, another victim on a long list of those who have suffered the same insults numerous times before.

For this day and age, as Gestede says, this is unacceptable and should be fixed by any means necessary.

Meanwhile, Spurs are reportedly keen on signing one of Middlesbrough's defenders...
