There’s little love lost between the two clubs and the match has got off to a feisty start with plenty of tackles and individual duels in the opening stages.
But in good news for Boro fans, their side has taken the lead at the Stadium of Light – courtesy of forward Cristhian Stuani, who was a part of the Riverside outfit’s successful promotion bid last season.
A series of swift, direct passes saw the Uruguay international pick up the ball just outside the box on the right-hand side.
The 29-year-old then unleashed an absolute worldie, leaving Sunderland goalkeeper Vito Mannone helpless as the ball jetted into the top corner of his net.
