Newcastle extend unwanted penalty record

Newcastle United were left wondering what might have been last night as a penalty shoot-out defeat to Premier League strugglers Hull City saw the Magpies miss the chance of securing a spot in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup.

Having dominated the match throughout the 120 minutes, Newcastle missed three penalties in the shoot-out to seal a disappointing exit from a competition where Rafael Benitez’ side will have fancied their chances of glory.

It caps off a disappointing week for the Magpies, who saw their winning run in the Championship ended by Blackburn Rovers at the weekend, and also continued a woeful spot-kick record that will leave Newcastle fans shuddering in terror.

Newcastle have now lost nine of their ten penalty shoot-outs in all competitions, with their only victory coming in the 2006/07 League Cup against Watford.

The Magpies will now turn their concentration to maintaining their top-spot position in the Championship, as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League, and will be looking to avoid further shoot-outs when they enter the FA Cup in January.
