Gutierrez calls upon Newcastle to box clever

Newcastle winger Jonas GutierrezNewcastle midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has called upon his team-mates to be clever in their Europa League tie with Metalist Kharkiv on Thursday.

The Magpies were held to a 0-0 draw at St James’ Park by their Ukrainian rivals, leaving their hopes of progression to the last-16 dependant on securing a positive result in Eastern Europe.

Although they are widely considered to be underdogs, one goal for Newcastle at the Metalist Stadium could swing the tie dramatically, and Gutierrez has urged his team to play with intelligence and pick their opportunities when the sides meet:

“We will have to be fairly clever with the way we approach the second leg. All of us will have to work out the best way to get behind them so we can create the opportunities to score.” He told the Chronicle.

“There is not much difference between the two sides. Metalist will attack us more in front of their own fans. But we can score over there. We will create chances.

“The most important thing is that we are clever about how we do that.”

The Argentine acknowledged that Newcastle must attack their opponents, but is wary that too much forward intent could leave them vulnerable:

“We will attack them, but we must use our heads.

“Metalist showed at St James’ Park that they are a team with goals in them, so we need to look after their offensive players and not allow them space at the back.”

Although Newcastle have been far from impressive this season, Gutierrez has performed relatively well in the black and white shirt.

The 29-year-old has made 22 Premier League appearances, notching one goal, which came against Chelsea during the club’s hard-fought 3-2 win.
