Newcastle to tie up deal for French ace ahead of World Cup

Newcastle are hopeful that they can tie up a deal for Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella before the World Cup starts, according to reports from the Shields Gazette.

The Magpies have been linked with the silky playmaker for some time, and even came close to securing his signature in January when Yohan Cabaye left the club to join PSG.

Cabella has recently hinted that a move to St James’ Park would appeal to him, and now it’s understood that Alan Pardew is ready to push ahead with a quick swoop.

The 24-year-old is on France’s standby list for the World Cup, but regardless of whether or not he makes his way to Brazil he is thought to want his future secured before the big kick-off.

Reports in his homeland indicate that Newcastle have opened the bidding at €8m, yet they may have to offer a little more with Montpellier holding out for closer to €10m (£8.1m).

Arsenal and Manchester United were also linked with Cabella over the winter, however their interest is thought to have cooled.

Newcastle may also move for another Ligue 1 star in the shape of Lyon’s Clement Grenier.

The 23-year-old was considered in January, yet a deal could not be pushed through in time.
