Forest should sign Sheyi Ojo from Liverpool rather than Pedro Chirivella

Nottingham Forest have been separately linked with deals for Liverpool youngsters Sheyi Ojo and Pedro Chirivella by The Irish Sun and The Nottingham Post respectively.

What’s the story?

Manager Aitor Karanka has already made 10 signings this summer, including breaking Forest’s transfer record with the capture of attacking midfielder Joao Carvalho for £13.2m. With the money put into the club by new owner Evangelos Marinakis the fans will be expecting a promotion push next season.

The Nottingham Post recently reported that the Reds are interested in 21-year-old defensive midfielder Chirivella from Liverpool, despite already signing Jack Colback from Newcastle.

The Spaniard spent last season on loan at Dutch Eredivisie side Willem II, playing 35 games and providing four assists during that stint. He has also made five appearances for Liverpool’s first team.

Same club, better option

Although Chirivella could be a good signing for Forest, Ojo is perhaps a more exciting player that Karanka could bring in from the Merseyside club to help with a title push.

Ojo has experience of playing in the Championship with Wigan, Wolves and also Fulham where he spent last season on loan. During his time with the West London side, the 21-year-old managed four goals and two assists in 22 league appearances.

The England U21 international is a powerful and pacy winger who loves to beat his full-back and cross into the danger area. Whilst still a relatively raw talent (as shown when Michael Mancienne got the better of him when the Cottagers beat Forest 3-1 at the City Ground in September 2017), Ojo would be a good option for Forest off the bench, although Karanka would be hoping for a fee a fair bit less than the £10m that Liverpool are reportedly asking for.
