HYS: Should Nottingham Forest make a move for free agent Philipp Wollscheid?

Nottingham Forest are midway through what could well turn out to be a successful season in the Championship under Aitor Karanka. They are right in the promotion mix and have a real chance at going up if they get the second half of the campaign right.

In attack, Karanka has no real worries, especially given the fact he has the league’s top scorer in his ranks in 14-goal Lewis Grabban, and the in-form Joe Lolley in behind him.

At the back, however, it is slightly different. Whilst they have a very, very good record defensively the strength in depth at the back is a potential issue. Behind Michael Hefele and 32-year-old Daniel Fox, they have just the veteran defender Michael Dawson and Tobias Figueiredo – another face is needed to deal with the gruesome fixture schedule.

In that respect, perhaps a dip into the free-agent market for former Stoke defender Philipp Wollscheid wouldn’t be a bad shout. The 29-year-old German is without a club, which is strange given how impressively he performed whilst with the Potters.
