Burnley’s 32-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton recently told The Mirror that he would be keeping his options open in January with an eye to a move that would guarantee him game time, and Nottingham Forest should make him their priority in January.
Forest currently sit in fifth in the Championship table with 19 points from their first 12 league games, but they could certainly have been higher if it weren’t for the mistakes of first-choice keeper Costel Pantilimon.
Recently, the Reds were 2-0 up against Millwall with just 15 minutes to play, but the 6ft 8in stopper almost single-handedly threw away the three points as he flapped at a cross, allowing Shaun Williams to head into an empty net before failing to stop an easy ball across the box that Lee Gregory prodded home for the equaliser.
The former Manchester City man is clearly not good enough to take Forest to the Premier League, as is their aim, and it would seem that manager Aitor Karanka is yet to trust summer signing Luke Steele enough to drop Pantilimon.
Heaton then would be a brilliant option for the Reds as he comes back to fitness. The England international suffered a dislocated shoulder last season that kept him out until the last few games of the campaign and allowed Nick Pope to blossom as the Clarets reached the Europa League.
This meant Pope was included in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad ahead of Heaton, but at the start of this season the 26-year-old also suffered a dislocated shoulder as Heaton was recovering from a calf problem.
This meant Burnley boss Sean Dyche was forced to bring in former England international Joe Hart from Manchester City, and his impressive performances could now force Heaton to move on if he wants to earn his place back in Southgate’s side. Moving to Forest then – even on loan – would give him the game time he desperately wants and needs.
