Nottingham Forest midfielder Pele looked like he would be a huge player for them between now and the end of the season following a brilliant debut performance in the 3-0 win against Hull City last weekend, but his display against Aston Villa in midweek suggested otherwise.
Well, the Monaco loanee had largely had to settle with a spot on the substitutes’ bench following his arrival from France during the January transfer window, but Martin O’Neill took the decision to start the 27-year-old against The Tigers.
It was a call that turned out to be a masterstroke as the Guinea-Bissau international produced a strong showing of power, athleticism and quality on the ball, and the former Republic of Ireland boss had clearly seen enough to convince him that he would make an impact against Aston Villa on Wednesday, too.
Pele certainly faced a battle considering he was coming up against the likes of Jack Grealish and John McGinn, and it was one he didn’t come out on top in.
To be frank, the midfielder was awful against Dean Smith’s men.

He didn’t show any of the qualities that he did against the Yorkshire club at the weekend, and in truth it would have been a real wake-up call for the 27-year-old that you need to be playing at your best every week in this division.
The African simply didn’t do what he needed to do to stop Grealish and McGinn influencing proceedings, and was nowhere near as dominant as he had been on The City Ground turf just a few days previously.
Pele must hope he is given an opportunity to redeem himself against Ipswich Town on Saturday, with Ben Watson and Adlene Guedioura waiting in the wings.
