Belgium international Laurent Ciman has explained why he rejected a switch to QPR this summer, in comments made to L'Equipe via SportWitness.

What's the word?

QPR's defensive struggles this season have been well documented and Steve McClaren has faced a difficult task assembling a defence capable of plugging the leaks at the back, although there is certainly still room for improvements.

A host of options were linked with the club this summer and 33-year-old Belgium international Laurent Ciman, who was on his nation's reserve list for the World Cup in Russia, has confirmed to L'Equipe via SportWitness that he was approached by the West London side.

However, Ciman turned down the advances of QPR and moved to French side Dijon from MLS outfit Los Angeles FC, explaining that his family situation prevented some moves as his daughter is autistic.

What was said?

"Oh yes, sure. I refused French, Italian or English clubs like Queens Park Rangers. Each time, I said no because I had no certainty on the spot about the well-being of my daughter."

A missed opportunity?

Signing a player with the experience that Ciman boasts would have provided a significant boost to Steve McClaren's side, but there can be no complaints regarding the decision made by the 33-year-old defender and fans will understand his situation.

Family reasons are what first drove Ciman to leave his native Belgium for North America and he certainly had a lot more to think about that other players would have had if they were approached by QPR in the summer.

In fact, a lot of respect needs to be given for Ciman to being honest and open about the situation.
