QPR are interested in signing Aston Villa target Trent Sainsbury according to journalist Alan Nixon of The Sun.

What's the story?

The 26-year-old centre-back plays for Chinese Super League team Jiangsu Suning, although he was on loan at Swiss club Grasshoppers for the second half of last season.

The Australian international only has six months left on his contract which makes him a realistic target for QPR and Aston Villa who have been linked with the defender valued at £900,000 on Transfermarkt.

Now journalist Alan Nixon has all but confirmed that Sainsbury is on his way to Loftus Road and he would become Steve McClaren's second signing of the summer after fellow centre-back Toni Leistner.

Shoring up the back

Steve McClaren has clearly identified a very leaky defence as one of QPR's most urgent problems after they conceded 70 goals in the Championship last season.

Sainsbury has a lot of experience, with loan spells at Inter Milan and 38 caps for his country and he could prove a very astute signing for the R's next season, and McClaren's smartest transfer decision since he took charge at Loftus Road.
