HYS: Should Sheffield United hand Billy Sharp a new contract?

Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp’s contract with the Championship club is due to expire at the end of the season, and as of yet there has been no update on whether he will be offered a new one.

From the Yorkshire outfit’s point of view, they will probably want to not only see what division they will be in next term before making a decision, but also that the 32-year-old can still offer enough on the pitch to make an extension worthwhile.

The Blades skipper has certainly proved the latter in the early stages of the campaign with four goals in eight appearances in all competitions, keeping the likes of Leon Clarke and Conor Washington out of the starting XI prior to Wednesday night as he began to forge a decent-looking partnership with summer addition David McGoldrick.

While he clearly loves his boyhood team, manager Chris Wilder will have no room for sentiment if he needs to make a tough call either in January or at the end of the season, and will need to make a decision that is best for the future of the club.

That said, if the former Southampton and Leeds man keeps up his current form then he may have little choice than to keep him at Bramall Lane for at least one more year – whether they win promotion or not.

So, Sheffield United fans, do you think the club should give Sharp a new contract? Let us know by voting on our poll below…
