According to a report by ESPN, Aston Villa are closing in on the loan signing of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, which should provide Championship rivals Sheffield United with the boost they need to finally bring Scott Hogan to Bramall Lane.

What's the word, then?

Scott Hogan celebrates with Josh Onomah and Conor Hourihane

Well, the Blades have been heavily linked with the 26-year-old striker throughout the summer with manager Chris Wilder desperate to add another option to compete with David McGoldrick, Leon Clarke and Billy Sharp, and he is said to be willing to make him the club's highest-paid player on £35,000-a-week.

However, he has thus far failed to make any progress on agreeing a deal for the Republic of Ireland international, with Steve Bruce unwilling to let Hogan go until the has a replacement lined up.

Sealing a temporary move for Abraham would surely be great news for the Yorkshire club, who may need that extra firepower if they are to be involved in the Championship promotion picture.

Would he be a good Sheffield United signing?

He certainly would be.

While the 26-year-old has been hampered by injury issues throughout his spell with Villa, he has still shown glimpses of being a natural goalscorer, while he proved with 21 goals in 36 games for Brentford previously that he is capable of finding the net on a regular basis.

Hogan would certainly have a big point to prove that he can perform for a big club at this level if he did arrive at Bramall Lane, and he would surely go on to be a key player for the Blades this season – as long as he can keep himself fit and get his confidence back.
